Question: How should a person who has fard salats to make up make intention for Salat al-Jumu'ah and its sunnat salats? ANSWER We will write item by item:
1. For the pre-fard sunnat salat of Salat al-Jumu'ah, one should intend, "I intend to perform the earliest Salat az-Zuhr I missed and to perform the sunnat salat of Salat al-Jumu'ah." Instead of the earliest Salat az-Zuhr one missed, one can also make the intention of performing the earliest Salat al-Asr or Salat al-Isha one missed. One must perform it in the same way as one performs the fard salat of Salat az-Zuhr [or Salat al-Asr or Salat al-Isha].
2. The two-rak'at fard salat of Salat al-Jumu'ah is performed with the imam. One should intend, "I intend to perform the fard salat of Salat al-Jumu'ah and to follow the imam."
3. For the post-fard sunnat salat of Salat al-Jumu'ah, one should intend, "I intend to perform the earliest Salat az-Zuhr I missed and to perform the post-fard sunnat salat of Salat al-Jumu'ah." Instead of the earliest Salat az-Zuhr one missed, one can also make the intention of performing the earliest Salat al-Asr or Salat al-Isha one missed. One must perform it in the same way as one performs the fard salat of Salat az-Zuhr [or Salat al-Asr or Salat al-Isha].
4. For Zuhr-i akhir salat, one should intend, "I intend to perform the latest Salat az-Zuhr whose prescribed time I have reached but which I have not performed" and perform a four-rak'at salat in the same way as one performs Salat az-Zuhr. If one does not have any qada salats, it is better for one to perform it like the sunnat salat of Salat az-Zuhr. That is, one should recite an additional surah in the third and fourth rak'ats. If one's Salat al-Jumu'ah is valid, this salat will be considered a nafila salat.
A safari (traveler) must perform Zuhr-i akhir as two rak'ats. If a safari knows that he will not be able to perform Salat al-Asr within its prescribed time, he does not have to perform Salat al-Jumu'ah because Salat al-Jumu'ah is not fard on a traveler. He should combine Salat az-Zuhr with Salat al-Asr by making use of the rule of the Maliki Madhhab. Because he is a safari, he must perform Salat az-Zuhr as two rak'ats, and immediately after it, must perform Salat al-Asr as two rak'ats. He must not perform a sunnat salat in between.
If a muqim intends to go on a journey without performing Zuhr-i akhir salat and if he knows that he will not be able to perform Salat al-Asr during the journey, he should combine Salat az-Zuhr with Salat al-Asr by making use of the rule of the Hanbali Madhhab. He must perform Salat az-Zuhr and Salat al-Asr as four rak'ats because he does the combining of the two salats when he is a muqim. He must not perform a sunnat salat in between.
5. For the final two-rak'at sunnat salat, one should intend, "I intend to perform the earliest Salat al-Fajr I missed and to perform the current time's sunnat salat."
For a person who does not have any qada salats, there is nothing wrong with performing Salat al-Jumu'ah in the abovementioned manner; it is better.
