Question: If a person believes in the six pillars of faith stated in the Amantu, but does not love the friends of Allah and instead has affection for the enemies of Allah, does this make him a disbeliever?
ANSWER
For one’s faith in the Amantu to be valid, there are two very important conditions:

1. Hubb-i fillah and bughd-i fillah:
Hubb means love and friendship. Hubb-i fillah means loving those whom one loves for the sake of Allah and being their friend for the sake of Allah. Bughd means not loving and being hostile. Bughd-i fillah means not loving those whom one does not love for the sake of Allah and being hostile toward them for the sake of Allah. The meaning of a hadith-i sharif on this subject is as follows:
(One who does not regard the enemies of Allah as enemies cannot be considered to have true faith. Whoever loves the believers for the sake of Allah and regards disbelievers as enemies attains the love of Allah.) [Imam-i Ahmad]

The Noble Companions adhered to hubb-i fillah and bughd-i fillah. The meanings of two verses are as follows:

(All those who were with the Messenger of Allah [the Noble Companions] were firm against the disbelievers, yet compassionate and gentle toward one another.) [Al-Fath 29]

(Allah loves them [the Noble Companions and the other righteous servants], and they love Allah. They are gentle toward believers and dignified and firm toward disbelievers. They strive in the way of Allah and do not fear the reproach of anyone. This is a bounty from Allah, which He grants to whomsoever He wills.) [Al-Maidah 54]

2. Believing in the ghayb [unseen]:
The essence of faith is to believe in the unseen. Belief in the unseen means affirming the religion of Islam as conveyed by the Messenger of Allah in his capacity as a Prophet; that is, accepting it and believing in it willingly and wholeheartedly, without considering whether or not it conforms to reason, experience, or philosophy. The meanings of three verses of the Qur’an are as follows:

(Those muttaqis believe in the ghayb [believe in what My Prophet communicated without seeing it], perform salat, and spend out of the property We have given them [for zakat and for all kinds of charity].) [Al-Baqarah 3]

(In order to make evident those who believe in Allah’s religion, His prophets, the ghayb and who help …) [Al-Hadid 25]

(You warn only those who fear their Lord without seeing Him and who perform salat.) [Fatir 18]

The meaning of a hadith-i sharif is as follows:

(When Allahu ta’ala wills goodness for a slave of His, He opens the eye of his heart, and that slave believes in the ghayb.) [Daylami]
